Thinking back since freshman year, I'm sure some of the Lunchtime Lectures have been technically more useful to me, like ones that gave career advice or a look at art school life, but I think this one was definitely my favorite. I really wish I could've been there for this one. While it seemed to be mostly about the history and the objects, I thought it was really fascinating when she talked about the appraisal and market and collecting part of the art world too, both in history and now. It's a part that I really don't think about that often, but it really is so important. But even more than that, I loved hearing about the rich history behind these works of art, having a world to put them in inside my mind. What little I learned about Russian history in freshman year Global Studies has completely leaked out of my mind by now, so I really appreciated all the details of history that surround these pieces. We walked briefly through the Faberge exhibit the last time I went to the VMFA, but I think next time I go, I'll have a way better appreciation for them. My favorite that she showed was definitely the First Hen egg - it's so much less ornate than the typical image of a Faberge egg, glittering and dripping with jewels, but its simplicity is the most beautiful part to me. Even just through video, I thought her talk was wonderful, and it made me really excited to see the exhibit again through new eyes the next time I go to the VMFA.
